  1. Erica said that Zoei Marie was born at 2:04 this morning and weighed 6 lbs and 12.5oz. She is 19.5 inches long. :D So here's a CONGRATS to Erica and baby Zoei! Today is also Erica's husband's birthday and her mom's. :)

  2. He's so happy to hear his mama's voice! Ive watched several videos with a SLP turning on the implants for the first time one woman was in her late 30's and she heard her children for the 1st time it was so emotional I balled lol. And I watched another with a young child hearing her dad for the first time she was about 5 or so and she was so excited.

  3. I absolutely love this video. It was the sweetest thing to see a little baby hear his moms voice for the first time and have the reaction that he had.

  4. That video melted my heart! That little boy just lit up when he heard his mom's voice! I thought it was funny how he sort of moved his mouth when he was looking around. Would that be like him mimicking what he saw his parents doing when they talked to each other and to him?

  5. As much as the world argues back and forth about the usage of cochlear implants and how it alienates people and so on and so forth, the expression on this child's face says quite a bit. In the end, it's every individual, and their parent's decision, and we should just sit back, keep our personal opinions to ourselves and revel in the moments that will make an individual them. Seriously, his expression as he looks at his mom and she just talks away at him is definitely adorable and something to be treasured.

  6. I am glad this was shared. I think the key is to remember that whether a child responds to their mother through sound or sign the most PRECIOUS part of life is the formation of significant RELATIONSHIPS. These can occur in so many ways between parents and children. The smiles that we see when children can hear a mother's voice is priceless and I know first hand the excitement of children who treasure the sounds they can now appreciate because of cochlear implants. I'm grateful they can experience those and use them in meaningful ways.

I'm equally grateful for the bonding moments that occur between parents and children via sign, facial expressions, touch, hugs and other forms of connection. I'm equally thrilled when I see so many d/Deaf people use the various components of nature in meaningful ways to live significant lives without sound.

I'm grateful to live in a land where we are given CHOICES. I'm equally grateful when I have the opportunity to be surrounded by individuals who choose to have open minds and value ALL people regardless of their choices.

  7. This brought tears to my eyes! It was precious when he dropped his binkie. A mother and child's bond is absolutely incredible. It doesn't take the child to be hearing to have this relationship though.

  8. I agree with you Kristen it doesn't take a child to hear to have this relationship:)

  10. This is really neat. No matter what people say about the debates of CI, and embracing the deaf culture-this video just demonstrates that we can put that aside and see that it has made a difference in this child's life! He is able to smile and laugh because he hears something new-and reacts just as every baby would react to hearing a mommy's voice :)

  11. I like what all the others have said about this being an individual's choice and that we should sit back and be happy with whatever the individual chooses. No matter if you feel this way or not I think we can all agree that this video was just adorable. I loved seeing how the little baby reacted to his mom's voice. He was just too cute!lol

  13. This is a very powerful video. It is interesting to see how the child first reacts to the noise. That babys smile is so sweet. This can also be a helpful video for other parents who are thinking about getting cochlear implants for their children.

  14. There is a commercial (I think a battery commercial) that uses a child who has the cochlear implants and is hearing the rain for the first time. Just reminded me of it. :)

  15. This is a very sweet moment and probably most parents dream if they have a deaf child. I also agree that there are choices and the best choice for one child is not always the same as the best for another. I do think that parents should talk to/interact with their babies no matter how much hearing loss they have because the child still understands the emotions behind it and the facial expressions.

  19. I loved this video! I almost started crying, it was so precious to see the baby respond to his mom's voice. I know that those parents must have been so happy to see him respond, and just to have that moment must have been so amazing.

  20. all I wanna say is Amen to what Ash and Mrs. White said - both of their posts were exactly what I wanted to say, so I'm combining them into one and that's my opinion on this video - so so incredible.

  24. This was a great video. I loved it when the child was able to hear his mother. This is a good video for other parents considering this kind of route with their child. I think that its important for us to keep open minds and when parents choose what method they think is best for their cild. One choice thats good for one may not be for another so its their choice. Great post thanks.

  25. So sweet! If anyone has ever seen the MTV True Life episode where a young man gets a cochlear implant and his mom is there when they first turn it on. The same sort of reaction happened when the young man heard his mom say his name for the first time. Super cool!

  26. I think it's amazing that technology let's this type of procedure happen so young. It will be very interesting when more longitudinal research comes out about the linguistic effects of cochlear implants on infants.
