Kentucky School for the Deaf

Hey all!

I went to KSD to observe an elementary school classroom this morning, and I am still jazzed about it! I stayed for about two hours and I just felt like I fit. Like, my heart was telling me "This is going to be you in the very near future!" and I just wanted to say that I cannot wait to be in the classroom!
One thing I found to be so cool was now naturally the teacher could transition to different teaching techniques and keep the students engaged in the lesson. And what was even cooler was I recognized some of them from my education classes, and also from lectures in my SED classes thus far; must mean something is going right, right?
I know it will feel a million and a half times different when we actually have our own classroom and our own students from when we are just observing but I just feel confident that we are all on the right track, and have good set of teachers preparing us for our future careers.

That's all!

  1. I think it is so great that you feel that way! I went to my observation for the interpreter setting and I, too, can't wait for my turn in the classroom. I love noticing that what I am learning and the people that I see in classrooms here on campus are making a difference. Thanks for sharing.

  2. I think this is great! I felt the same way last week when I went to observe at the Heuser Hearing and Language Academy in Louisville. When I got there I got to observe this kids who all came in signing when they first started attending the school, but now are able to talk and communicate with no problem. The kids were so loving and open to talk to you. I also got to go and observe a music class which was a lot of fun because we played the game twister. Every time the teacher would hold up a color we had to move to that color and danced. The kids really loved it and I loved seeing how happy they were. I left feeling so good and so excited about my future and I hope to work in a place like that school one day.

  3. That is really exciting! And that is definately how you know you are meant to be a DHH teacher. When you leave a school thinking, "I can't wait to do that" and just feel like you fit. That way you are enthusiastic every day you have "work." Every time I go to St. Rita's I feel that way, too.

  4. I totally understand that feeling. It's always so great when you can go into observation of your future profession and just love everything about it. I really liked when I went to mine a few weeks ago. It was just so cool.

  5. I did my observation over spring break and I know the feeling. Having that feeling of WOW that will be me one day. I hope that I will be able to fill those shoes. It is a great feeling, which can also be overwhelming sometimes.

  6. I'm going March 28th. So excited! The last time I was even in a classroom like this was when I was little and my parents were looking around at schools trying to decide what school they thought would be best for me. Obviously, they picked the mainstream approach. But it excites me that I just know that I'll sit in that classroom and love every bit of it and know that I made the right career choice. Oh gosh, now I'm nervous! Hehe!

  7. It's really cool to know what you want to do in life and then go out and see it in action. It gives the most amazing feeling of fulfillment!
