I found this video that one of my professors posted on facebook. I thought it was interesting to take a child's perspective as well as interviews from parents about teaching their deaf and hard of hearing children. To summarize, it focuses on teaching ASL to babies...and then as they get older introducing speech therapy, hearing aids, English and so on...

ReplyDeleteGreat post Amy, one of the teachers in the video said that ASL is a gift. While I am learning to be more accepting to other ways of educating deaf student I really appreciate the fact that an educator to deaf children said that ASL is a gift. I believe that and watching kids sign is a really enlightening and encouraging experience.
ReplyDeleteI honestly am all for baby sign, and teaching ASL to kids, it's a great idea to help children develop language early. Even if the child doesn't have hearing problems before children develop language (the terrible 2's) there so terrible because they just can't communicate. That's why the kids behave the way they do because they understand concepts and such but they don't have the language to communicate. If you teach them baby sign along with attaching the oral words to it then they get to communicate with you and it helps them develop earlier than children who are just receiving oral language.
ReplyDeleteJessica--I agree! I had a teacher in high school that taught baby sign for parents of deaf and hearing children. I remember reading somewhere that children develop visually before they can actually learn to articulate sounds, words, and thoughts. With ASL deaf and hearing children have an opportunity to develop language and communication skills at an earlier age.
ReplyDeleteKeisha--Thanks for the post...I thought it was a pretty cool video too!
This made me remember being taught sign language as a child from my mother, who took classes when she found out I was deaf. It's definitely effective and helped me out in many ways at a time when I was adapting to the loss of hearing and a time when she wasn't sure if I could understand her. It's helped me to be a better communicator and it's one of the reason the bond between us is very strong.
ReplyDeleteI am all for communciation in ASL as a strong teaching tool for literacy and speech, if the student wants it. It's definitely helpful in many ways.
This is a great video. I loved it and it made me think of my friend Brett. He was just telling me about how his mother learned sign, while his father didn't. To this day he has a relationship with his mother and not his father. I agree with the video in that many parent should want to have that communication with their child.
ReplyDeleteI really loved how one parent said that she would take her daughter to a Deaf social as a young child and now her daughter feels comfortable around either hearing people or Deaf people. I think that is great to have that self confidence.
i watched that video. Wonderful and touching. I loved it and I am glad to know that there are parents out there so supportive towards their deaf children. Parents can make the difference
