I am going to answer ONE of the questions I posed last night. I AM FULLY CONFIDENT that the students who are in SED337 have the potential to work alongside others in the field of Deaf Education and the Deaf Community to make an INCREDIBLE impact on the education of our NEXT GENERATION LEARNERS. You may be preparing to be an Interpreter, a Speech & Language Pathologist, an Educator or many of the other professions that will touch young lives. I believe you will make a difference. Do you?
Absolutely. We have to! The generation before us made a huge difference by allowing the use of sign. They did many great things that benefited the deaf communities, but now it’s our turn to do something. We can build off of what has already been accomplished. I’m excited to see what the future holds and how we can change it.
ReplyDeleteABSOLUTELY
ReplyDeleteHeck yeah we can!
ReplyDeleteWe just have to know that we can.
It takes wanting to make a difference to actually make it.
I believe that if we set our minds out to be different than things will change and we can make that impact. I think since we have seen and heard the good and the bad we can prepare our self to do better. Of course mistakes will be made, but we will learn and grow from those. I agree with Jessica Cornett in that we can build off of what has already been accomplished! I can't wait to make an impact on someones life.
ReplyDeleteYES! I think it's of the utmost importance to keep an open mind no matter what specific field we chose to go into. As we learned from our panelists, it is the parent/student/consumer's role to make informed decisions for what is best for each individual. It is important to realize, that our actions and choices will have an impact on the lives of those whom we interact with, and it's up to us to make sure that is a positive experience.
ReplyDelete100% yes! I cannot wait until I can get out in the field and start impacting lives of the next generation. I think about it all the time and how I, as an elementary interpreter, will be a language model for students.
ReplyDeleteI hope so. It took me a long process to discovering my life's destiny. Before I fell into God's plan of interpreting, I wanted to impact the world in many other ways but I discovered that through interpreting-- I can change and positively impact lives one interpretation-positive attitude-encouraging behavior-smile-etc at a time. I was made to make a difference and I am planning on doing that. Not I but He in me!
ReplyDeleteI believe that no matter what we do, we will always impact each others lives just by being there. I hope that my impact on the lives of the people I work will be a positive one. I also believe that EKU does an amazing job of educating us about Deaf culture and that will help all of us to be more respectful and understanding of the people we work with. In this way I think we can make all the difference in the world.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with what you said in class on wed. We are able to push our deaf students to be whatever they want to be, and it is our job to make sure they get there. They do not need to be transformed to the hearing world to be the best learners-they can be who they want to be in a deaf world, being deaf. We need to use our abilities to push them to the highest level of success. We CAN do it.
ReplyDeleteI do think I can make an impact on the lives of the deaf. Without interpreters, deaf people would have very limited access to the hearing world. Not only do I want to give them access to our world, but I also want them to be able to enjoy it. By interpreting, I hope I can not only give them the information they need, but also form relationships and aid the deaf in other ways.
ReplyDeleteI honestly hope that I am going to be able to have a positive impact on the lives of those who are deaf! Once I am out in the real world and start my life as a Deaf educator I plan on doing everything that I possibly can to help my students. I think that if those who are in the deaf community work hard to make that world better than it will become a better place.
ReplyDeleteWe must do what we can to help who we can. I totally agree that there are some people in the world who will make excuses and only do the minimum. But I hope I can go above and beyond for the students I have in the future. Because every student deserve the maximum amount of tools to help them in the world they live in.
ReplyDeleteI believe I can truly make a difference. I'm kind of not sure what I want to do anymore...but I'm confident I can get up in the morning and truly love what I do. I'm confident I can do whatever it is to the best of my ability and I believe someone, somewhere will look back and say, "hey, she impacted my life." Maybe it will be a student, or a parent, or one of my own kids. I'm not sure...but I know whatever I end up doing is God's will. If He's on my side...I'll never fail.
ReplyDeleteI totally think we can. Like a lot of other people on here, I feel like we are the generation to DO something with what we've learned. We have the past to show us the good and the bad, and we have the building blocks to be a great force of interpreters, educators, speech pathologist, etc. that really impact those who we work with. I have yet to meet someone in any of my DHH classes who I feel is doing this to stamp a paycheck at the end of the week. We all have our different ways of getting to where we are, but we all have some sort of drive in our hearts that put us interacting with the Deaf, and we can help drive them to reach their full potential.
ReplyDeleteI just feel very blessed to get to interact with such a diverse group with all different perspectives but we come together to help each other achieve the common goal of working with the Deaf.
I think we will be highly prepeared for the field. The only thing I am a little self-conscious of is my signing skills vs. a Deaf adults signing. I feel like they would judge me but I always have time to get on a higher level. But I am highly excited to get into the Deaf Community!
ReplyDeleteIn one way or another I believe that we (the class) has what it takes to be all that we can in the Deaf Community. (Did I say that right?) I agree with Amy's statement. I also like Ashley Overbeck's comment because of being self-conscious; signing skills vs. Deaf adults signing, I too feel like people are judging me because I came into this ASL learning at a later age. I can't wait to get on a higher level, but it takes practice, practice, and more practice. I have always said that I am shy in the English world and the Deaf world both. But i feel more comfortable in the Deaf World myself.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. We chose these fields to study and work in ... We will be as prepared as we choose to be, just as in life.
ReplyDeleteI like this quote by Horace Mann, an American educator in the 19th century:
"Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity."
I have been working with a camp for medically fragile kids and I believe they have made a bigger impact on me than I ever could on them. I will one day be an Occupational Therapist and I can't see my opinion about these kids changing any time soon. I am there to facilitate and support as much as I can and if that translates into an impact for them then that's great. If not, I will still keep trying to hardest to help them as best I can and in the meantime, I'll take what they teach me and be so incredibly grateful.
ReplyDeleteyes we can!!!!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely believe we can -- We can each make out own little impact, but it will be when we all come together, regardless of our impact on that community that we can really make things happen.
