Welcome to SED337

Welcome to our Class Blog! It will be used in a variety of ways to extend course content.  It is open to YOU to find creative ways to use it to solidify and extend your own learning!!!

Topics discussed in class will be discussed and explored here through your interaction and sharing with one another.  Questions relative to class material and assignments are welcome here.  Information relative to tests will be posted here such as sample questions and model answers.

Posting to the blog - either your own initial posts, responding to others or a combination of the two is a REQUIRED part of the course and a part of your overall grade.  You are required to post each month of the semester and it is most beneficial to you and your peers if you take time to do this at least once weekly.

Get started by posting a brief introduction of yourself!  Please include your major, years at EKU and home town/state.  You may include other information about you, your family, future goals, etc.

  7. Hey guys! My name is Melinda Wright and I am a freshman at EKU. I am from Columbus, OH (Im 4 hours away from home!) and my major is Deaf Education, with a Elementary ed. degree as well. My birthday was just last Saturday, which was exciting. I am very close to my roommate Sarah, and my friend Hannah who are both in the interpreting program.
My parents are indeed both deaf, so I have grown up in the deaf community all my life, going to a deaf church. I LOVE the deaf, and using sign language all the time :) After I graduate I would like to possibly work at KSD, Kentucky School for the deaf, maybe as a middle or high school teacher.

  9. Hello! My name is Catherine Laswell. I am a sophomore majoring in ITP (Interpreter Training Program) with a minor in Special Education. I was born and raised in Danville, Kentucky and my family moved to Shelbyville, Kentucky my sophomore year of high school. I graduated from Shelby County High in 2009. My family is back in Danville, living there. Growing up my mom taught at Kentucky School for the Deaf (KSD), so a lot of my babysitters were deaf and we had deaf students stay with us from time to time. Because of this, my first language was actually sign language. I plan to graduate with my bachelors and get a good interpreting job before coming back to get my masters. I am eager to learn a lot in this class and to meet everyone. :)

  21. Hi! My name is Sarah Nestor and I am TOO excited about this semester. I'm an interpreting major (ASLIE) and love to sign. I have learned so much since I came to Eastern last year. I'm a junior now and in my freshman year I attended a school in WV for a year under the same major and learned a lot from there too. However, KY is where my heart is now :) The people in my program are the best in the world and I am so blessed to get to hang out with them every week!
A few more personal things about me: I attend Vineyard church here in Richmond, I have two sisters back home whom I love and miss dearly, I plan to do a lot of traveling in my future, and brownies are probably my favorite thing.

  22. Hey everyone! My name is Kristen Koeninger. I am from Villa Hills, KY which is right across the river from Cincinnati. My major is Deaf/HH Middle Grade Teaching with an emphasis in Math. I am a sophomore here. I have one older sister. I am so ready to get out of the dorms because I am sick of the fire alarm going off randomly for people cooking bacon. Other than that, I am easy going and excited for this semester! See everyone in class!

  23. Hey, My name is Keisha Osborne. I was born and raised in Louisville Ky. I am the oldest of 4 children and I am an interpreting major who absolutely loves deaf people, their language and their culture. It took me a really long time to come to grips of what I was made to become in life. I personally thought that signing was a hobby and that I could do that on the side instead of making it really close to my entire life. But I had a "come to Jesus" talk with God and realized that I get to do my favorite hobby for a living in communicating with deaf people. Thats awesome!

I guess my future goal is to be the best I can possibly be at interpreting and at living. Any ambition that decides to show up in my life I think I should just do what ever it takes to accomplish it. I understand that this is really vague but I am learning to keep promises to myself instead of making them and being disappointed by not accomplishing them. THiS is an everyday journey and daily I win.

I am from a small town in southern Ohio that no one ever has heard about...haha I also have a nephew that I go home to spend as much time as I can with. This is my second year at EKU, I began my college career at WKU with a focus on Communication Disorders. I studied abroad for the Fall semester of 2008. It was a great opportunity and when I came home, realized I needed to change majors and schools to something that fits my liking more. I like in Nicholasville with my brother, mother and her new husband. We recently moved, but grew up in Frankfort. My goal in life is to become an international sign language interpreter, and i'm hoping to be in England next year doing my internship for interpreting! Hope to have a great semester.

  35. Hey! I'm Stephanie Snider, I am a junior DHH major, I transfered to EKU last year from UK. I'm still getting use to the culture shock of the different schools but I like EKU for the most part (I do miss having lunch next to the UK basketball players almost every day!)

I grew up in danville and was a swimmer for 8 years, My swim team practices were held at KSD and so i got to experience some of the deaf culture then. I started my college carrier at UK majoring in Special Ed Moderate to Severe disabilities but during my intro to special ed class, i fell in love with sign language and the deaf community.

I recently found a love for cooking (mostly cooking deserts) and i hope to one day attend pastry school just because I can.
